About the data and calculations
Data
The data has been taken as-is from published sources. These are known to contain some errors, but correcting or making allowance for these is outside the scope of this mapping exercise! Each individual distribution map page lists the sources used for it. In each case only mainland England and Wales were considered.
Calculations
Let s be the local occurrences and n be the local population. Total occurrences S = Σs and total population N = Σn.
percentage = 100*s/S. For a particular region, this is the proportion of Doveys who were in this region.
frequency = 100*s/n. For a particular region, this is the proportion of the regional population that was Doveys.
relative density = (s/S)/(n/N).
Mapping
Only mainland England and Wales were considered. The raw census data were loaded into GenMap UK, which allocated the census places to counties and registration districts (in some cases overriding the county that was listed in the census). The summaries by county and registration district were exported and used for the calculations described above. The resulting sets of data were then mapped using GenMap UK.
