The data mapped below are taken from various transcriptions of the 1841-1901 censuses of England and Wales. These are known to contain errors, so the maps are only a rough indication of Dovey distribution. Sadly Dovey is a name easily mistranscribed (e.g. as Dover, Davey, etc.). The maps may be updated as corrected data are made available.
The maps were last updated in May 2006. In each case the small map image is a link to a larger version of itself. All maps were generated using GenMap UK.
These maps show the raw number of occurrences of the surname "Dovey", mapped by county. No surname variants were considered and no further calculation has been performed on the data. Given the increase in overall population as time progressed we would expect a similar increase in Dovey events.
It is likely that the Cornish "Dovey" families are in fact "Davey", but this needs checking.
The occurrences of the surname Dovey in the 1881 census are taken from the 1881 British Census and National Index CDs published by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1999. This data is a transcription of the original census enumerations and is known to contain some errors. No surname variants were considered and no corrections were made. This website includes a separate, more detailed, Distribution in the 1881 census of England and Wales page.
